How to begin my hoisting cable algorithm ?

I am a student and now I want to make the simulation of the hoisting cable of crane;I have read many papers about rigidbody simulation and learn about ODE,but when I begin to write my own algorithm to simulate the cable I find I don not know how to begin.So I want to refer a simple rigidbody simulation program with joint constraint . Can anyone give me some help?
