How do I use rest length to scale a rope?

Hi,
I know this question has been asked a couple of times already, but I can't get the hang of how to do this. I've seen Erwin answer one such question with "You can set the RestLength parameter to scale the rope".
This post especially: http://bulletphysics.org/Bullet/phpBB3/ ... th+of+rope
Now I've tried this ( I use Bullet inside Unity3d ) but it is not clear exactly what I need to set to accomplish this.
Do I set the RestLength and the SoftBody automatically recalculates after doing UpdateConstants call?
Or do I need to set the Nodes also to their new positions? Meaning I have to do all the work manually?
I don't mind doing a bit of extra programming, but right now it is not clear what is expected of me in the first place.
