Compound Collision Shapes in Blender

If I have a complex model that already exists in Blender and I want to create a custom compound collision shape then how do I do this? The model is fairly detailed and I want to create a couple of small spheres to represent it's collision mesh (I don't want to use a convex hull).

Any idea how I would add some child meshes that don't get rendered yet act as the physics collision meshes?
